Intro -
For this activity we will be using software on the internet found at floor planner.com It's great software for drawing house plans, you should check it out!
I chose this software because it's great for beginners, because it requires a minimum amount of information to create a free account, and because they don't share that information with others. Nonetheless, district policy requires parental permission.
Parental consent forms were sent home with students, and need to be signed and returned when we begin the activity on Monday. Parental consent forms are also available by clicking the link below.

Schedule -
Day 1 - I introduced the activity, and gave students some background information about residential construction and the jobs involved in building a house.
Day 2 - Students were shown a floorplan, and asked to create a rough sketch of a modified version of the floorpan.
Day 3 - Students were introduced to floor planner.com, then asked to create an account. Students then watched a short video tutorial of how to use the floor planner interface. Students then drew the outside walls, and inside walls to define the rooms of their house.
Day 4 - Students added doors, windows, and floor coverings to their house.
Day 5 - Students added furniture, cabinets, and appliances to their house.
Day 6 - Students landscaped their house.
Day 7 - Students finished up their house and exported it to Mr. Stratton for grading. Points will be awarded for each completed section: 25 points for the walls, 25 points for the doors, windows, and floor coverings, 25 points for adding furniture, cabinets, and appliances, and 25 points for landscaping.

Directions -
- To complete this activity follow the directions below:
- Go to houseplans.com
- In the search window enter plan 1-1357
- To the right of the pictorial view click on the floorplan.
- Pretend you've bought this house, and you're going to remodel it so you can flip it.
- Study the plan, and look for ways to improve the layout.
- Make a rough sketch of the floorplan with your improvements.
- Now, pretend you need to draw a floorplan to show your financing institution.
- Create a new tab and go to floorplanner.com
- Click on the button in the upper right hand corner that says signup.
- A window will pop up that says Sign Up for Free.
- You will have to type in your school account username and password. Be sure to uncheck the box that says remember me on this computer, then click Sign Up.
- Watch the floorplanner tutorial video.
- Create a new tab and go to floorplanner.com once again.
- Click on your email address in the upper right hand corner of the video. Drag down to my account.
- Create a new floorplan using the instructions from the video. You only get one floorplan with the free account, so don't delete it.
- Draw the floorplan using your sketch.
- Click on the tab to review the tutorial if necessary.
- Add doors, windows, etc.
- Watch any additional floorplanner tutorials you need.
- Have Mr. Stratton approve your completed floorplan.
- Add floor coverings, furniture, etc.
