Week 3, August 28 - September 3
Biodiesel - We continued our discussion of resource management with a focus on energy and fuels. We recognized a need to move away from fossil fuels to other forms of fuel that are renewable, such as biofuels. We watched a video about how ethanol is made in a production facility, then discussed jobs related to biofuel production. Students can make up this assignment by either coming before or after school, or during lunch to watch the video, or they can do a little research online about biofuels and write in their own words what they learned. Students will need 1 page, single spaced to make up for the work they missed. This assignment was due August 28.
DNA Extraction - Students will be introduced to the concept of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's), and how and why they are used in agriculture. Students will be taught, then have the opportunity to extract DNA from a strawberry to see what it would be like to work in biotechnology. Since this is a classroom activity that cannot be easily reproduced students can make up the assignment by doing a little online study about GMO's in agriculture, and write in their own words what they learned. They will need 1 page, single spaced to make up for the work they missed. This assignment will be due August 29.
Harvesting Tech - Students will learn about technology in agriculture, and we will watch a video about technology used in harvesting crops. Students are welcome to come before or after school to watch the video if they miss it. Otherwise, they can do some online research about harvesting technology and write in their own words what they learned. This assignment is due August 30.
Measurement Pre-test - Students will be tested to see how well they've learned the concepts of measurement in fractions of an inch. To take the pre-test click on the link here and follow the directions. Do the best you can. At the bottom be sure to type your first and last name, then click submit. You will have approximately 20 minutes to complete the pre-test. When you are done, please logout and return your computer to the cart. Please place the computer in the appropriate slot and plug it in. To make up the assignment check with Mr. Stratton.
Following Directions Worksheet - There will be a booklet and a worksheet on your desk. When you are done with the measurement pre-test read and follow the directions to complete the worksheet. Please do not write in the booklet. It's likely you will make a few mistakes. That's OK, just learn from your mistakes and move on. I will pick up your worksheet at the end of class. To make up the assignment check with Mr. Stratton.
If you complete both of these assignments before the end of class you are welcome to read in your book. These assignments are due August 31.

Measurement Instruction and Practice - We will have direct instruction and discussion about concepts regarding measurement in fractions of an inch. Students will then have the opportunity to practice what they've learned. When Mr. Stratton directs you to, go pick up a chromebook, log in, then go to ruler game.net Follow the directions under the yellow panel. You may start where you are comfortable, but the goal is to measure proficiently in halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths, so try each of them. If you get a good score on one of your games show Mr. Stratton. He will put your name on the board, and at the end of class we will declare a winner of the ruler game for the period. You will need a good score in sixteenths to be considered as a winner. If you are absent for this assignment just check with Mr. Stratton, and he can provide an alternative activity that is easy to do.
Measurement Post-test - After you've had a chance to practice and you feel you're ready, click on the link here and complete the post-test. You will need to leave yourself at least 15 minutes to do this. If you get done with the post test before the end of class you may play the ruler game some more to improve your score, or you may read your book. When you are done log out and return your computer to the correct slot on the cart and plug it in. Check with Mr. Stratton if you would like to make up this assignment.
The above assignments are due September 1.
