Week 4,   November 4 - November 10

Manufacturing

Day 1  We did a little wrap up of our Engineering and Design activity and reviewed the purpose of the activity, who enjoyed the activity, who felt they learned something worthwhile, etc.  We also introduced our current activity about manufacturing by defining manufacturing and watching a film clip that showed in a little more detail what manufacturing is all about.  Following the clip we formed a manufacturing company - CVMS Toy Co. - and started a flow chart detailing all the steps it would take to make a simple toy.

Day 2  We completed the flow chart by
detailing specific steps it would take to manufacture each individual part of the toy, then the steps necessary to assemble the parts and package the completed toy.  Each step on the flow chart represented a job that needed to be done.  We added some management positions, and students then filled out and submitted a job application for the job they wanted to do.

Day 3  Mr. Stratton, the CEO of the CVMS Toy Co., reviewed the applications, then selected and hired the Chief Operations Officer (COO).  The two of us then reviewed applications and hired a foreman for the wood production department, the string department
, the assembly line department, and the packaging department.  The  COO then assisted the foremen in hiring the people they needed.  While students weren't involved in the hiring process they learned more about manufacturing by watching a video.  Tomorrow we will set up the assembly line and go into production.

Day 4   Students received some training regarding the assembly line and their specific jobs, then the line was organized and we went into production.  Management identified and solved problems, assembly line workers were on task, and overall the activity went very well.  At the end of the production run, each student was paid with a toy.

To make up days of absence during the Manufacturing activity you may research and write a report about manufacturing.  You will about 1 page for each day of absence.  If you missed filling out a job application, you can make that up by doing so.  Just ask Mr. Stratton for the application.

Day 5  Mrs. Nielson will teach CDA #3.
