Description: College and Career Awareness is a 3 semester class taught by three teachers. Students learn about careers in the areas of Family and Consumer Science, Health, Information Technology, Business, Marketing, Technology, Engineering, and Agriculture. Most importantly students learn what their interests and abilities are. The purpose is to help students begin thinking about their future, and what career they will pursue as adults.
Grading: In my class students will have the opportunity to earn about 20 points per day. If they consistently earn about 20 points per day they will have an A. Students who earn less than an average of 20 points per day because of missing or late assignments, quizzes, or tests will have less than an A. The grading scale is as shown:
A 93% - 100%A- 90% - 92%
B+ 87% - 89%B 83% - 86%B- 80% - 82%
C+ 77% - 79%C 73% - 76%C- 70% - 72%
D+ 67% - 69%D 63% - 66%D- 60% - 62%
F 0% - 59%
Managing grades: All teachers in the Iron County School District use PowerTeacher, grading software that allows students and their parents to access grading and attendance information via Powerschool on the Internet. Powerschool is a tremendous tool for both students and parents to use, and its’ use is highly encouraged! You can get your username and password from the office personnel. In my class, assignments will ordinarily be entered the same day they are handed in for morning classes, and the next day for afternoon classes. Also, in my class a computer will be provided for students to access their grades if they have returned a signed Internet User Agreement.
Make Up Work and Extra Credit: Missed assignments should be made up by completing the original assignment whenever possible. Students can come in before and after school most days to work on their assignments. In some cases the assignment can be completed at home. Extra Credit assignments are available which can easily be done at home to improve a student’s grade. However, school policy is that extra credit cannot be more than 5% of a student’s grade.
Late work: This class is a vocational class, which means a big part of what we do is to prepare students for the world of work. So, we not only help students learn about their interests and abilities in preparation for choosing a career, we also help them learn and practice basic skills necessary for success in their chosen career. Things like showing up, being on time, being productive, managing resources, completing and submitting work on time, etc. will be taught, emphasized, and encouraged. Project management will be part of the grade for many of the activities, which brings with it an expectation that work will be completed and submitted on time. If the assignment will be late due to excused absence, students are welcome to ask for an extension. In general extensions will be 1 day, plus one day for each day of absence.
How to succeed: In College and Career Awareness/Tech there is plenty of opportunity for students to learn, and have fun doing it. Students will be successful if they attend regularly, participate and get the assignments done and handed in on time, ask for help when they need it, and use the tools provided to manage their grade. Usually the students who have trouble succeeding in this class are those who are absent or tardy excessively, who socialize or daydream too much, fail to ask the teacher for help, don’t come to class prepared, or just don’t care. Also, students will not pass the class if they fail to meet deadlines for handing in their work, or fail to monitor their progress and make up work when necessary. The good news is that most students are successful in College and Career Awareness/Tech. However, it is beneficial for parents to be aware and supportive.
Attendance: This class is very much a “hands on”, participation class. Much of what we do cannot easily be taken home and completed like a textbook assignment. Therefore, regular attendance is important. When an absence is unavoidable students are still responsible for the work they miss, even when the absence is excused. After an absence students are to check with Mr. Stratton and make arrangements to make up their missed work as soon as possible.
To maximize class time I intend to start class when the tardy bell rings. If students are not in their seats when the tardy bell rings they are either missing instruction or holding up the class while we wait for them to get in their seats. Therefore, students will be required to be in their seat when the bell rings.
Discipline: I’ve established some class rules that will help create a good learning atmosphere. We will go over the rules in class so students understand what they mean. The rules involve coming to class on time and prepared, being safe, using class time wisely, respecting others, and respecting the facilities. If a student breaks a rule I will ordinarily give a verbal warning. If the student fails to heed the warning a work habit slip will be given which documents the offense. The number and nature of work habit slips will help to determine a student’s citizenship grade. A slip may not always be issued for tardiness, but tardiness will affect the citizenship grade as well. Due process will be followed for students whose behavior disrupts learning. Parents will likely be included in the process. If students cannot improve their behavior sufficiently they may be removed from the classroom.
Safety: Students will be taught how to use the power tools safely, and will be required to pass a safety test before using the tools. Students will be expected to use the information they’ve learned to keep themselves and others safe. Each student is required to wear eye protection whenever near power tools in operation, or whenever engaged in an activity that might pose a hazard to their eyesight.
Needs: There is a $15 class fee that covers the entire year of College and Career Awareness. If you’ve already paid the fee, thank you. If not, please pay the fee as soon as you are able. This will cover the cost of materials for projects that, for the most part, students will be able to take home when they are done. In addition, because students will be using power tools they will need to provide a pair of safety glasses or goggles to protect their eyes. Students will also need to provide a lock to secure their materials. If you need to buy a lock, combination locks are highly recommended.
